It was announced that Matthew Schaefer will miss the rest of the World Juniors for Team Canada, and now the club has announced who will replace him.

Canada has failed with a disappointing 3-2 shootout defeat at the hands of Latvia in the World Junior Championship. This triggered snubbed players like Zayne Parekh and Carter Yakemchuk into calling the team out.

Latvia's goaltender Linards Feldbergs stood spectacularly, making 55 saves on 57 shots thrown at him.

An early and serious blow was dealt to Team Canada as Matthew Schaeffer collided with the net only minutes into the first period and was forced out of the game. The absence of Matthew Schaeffer is a huge blow.

The Erie Otters defenseman had an outstanding season in the OHL, collecting 22 points in 17 games, and was highly regarded in scouting reports, with some even ranking him above James Hagens for the 2025 NHL Draft.

TSN's Bob McKenzie confirmed that Schaeffer suffered a broken collarbone, an injury likely to sideline him for two to three months.

With Canada set to go head-to-head with Germany tomorrow, it had been speculated by the fans whether Sawyer Mynio would replace Schaeffer. Sure enough, word comes in that Sawyer Mynio is, in fact signing on.

And he'll have a gilt-edged chance to prove his mettle in international competition tomorrow. The fans, therefore, will be keenly waiting to see him rise to the occasion and enable Canada to bounce back from their tough loss to Latvia.

The onus will fall on how this team responds to life without Schaeffer, and how much time Mynio gets.
