Last night the referees in the Eastern Conference Finals between the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers caused a ton of debate with a controversial call. The Florida Panthers came into the Eastern Conference Finals looking to dominate. After gaining a 1-0 lead they scored again with a goal that ended up being the story of the game.

The play was challenged an eventually overturned by the replay center for goaltender interference by Ryan Lomberg on Igor Shesterkin. The Rangers successfully challenge for goaltender interference The game remains 1-0 Panthers #NHL | #NYR | #TimeToHunt

The call led to outrage from fans who think that Ryan Lomberg was pushed by defenseman Ryan Lindgren which would cancel out the goalie interference. This led to many fans online complaining about how subjective the goalie interference rules can be. I honestly think the Bennett goaltender interference was worse than that one. Not sure where Lomberg could go there?? Jump over the goalie? Sucks. Wrong call. #TimeToHunt

Wait, so that's goalie interference but the Coyle play wasn't? The NHL has no idea what it's doing with this stuff.

The murky qualifications for goalie interference seem to give referees too much room to interpret the rules on many occasions. On the play involving Ryan Lomberg, he looks to clearly be shoved which should cancel out the interference. Hopefully this summer the NHL can look at this rule and refine the language to make it more clear to interpret.
