Columbus Blue Jackets trade former top 5 pick Patrik Laine to the Montreal Canadiens

This afternoon another big trade has gone down in the NHL this time the Columbus Blue Jackets are trading Patrik Laine to the Montreal Canadiens.

Reports are flying in this afternoon that are beginning to confirm a major trade sending Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Montreal Canadiens. First Elliotte Friedman put out the news that a trade was close.

Then it was confirmed by multiple sources including Elliotte Friedman himself that the trade was indeed done. Patrik Laine will be heading to Montreal.

Now new reports are confirming what the full trade is. Patrik Laine will be sent to the Montreal Canadiens along with a 2nd round pick. The Columbus Blue Jackets will receive 24-year-old defenseman Jordan Harris who played 56 games in the NHL last season.

Further reports have confirmed that there will be no salary retention by the Columbus Blue Jackets. They completely get out of the Patrik Laine contract by attaching the second-round pick to him.

The Montreal Canadiens now take on another young player in need of a change of scenery. After being in the NHL's Player Assistance Program last season Patrik Laine will be looking to bounce back in 2024-25.

The Blue Jackets get a young defenseman as they continue to build their team up on their way back to the playoffs. As this season gets underway it will be fun to evaluate how this trade looks throughout the year.
