The Edmonton Oilers have a major issue on their hands in veteran Evander Kane, and with training camp approaching, they just can't get their story straight.

Evander Kane's situation has been an interesting one over the off-season, but given the team's salary cap situation, it doesn't bode well heading into the 2024/25 campaign. According to Jeff Jackson earlier in the off-season, Kane is dealing with a hip injury, but now the player himself has mentioned a hernia, and the messaging they are putting out into the public just isn't good.

«What makes him such a wild card is that it's hard to read from day to day and interview to interview where Kane stands health wise. CEO Jeff Jackson mentioned an «issue with his hip,» and the nature of his injury and recovery path remains unclear. Meanwhile, Kane called it a «sports hernia» that was bugging him most of last season. Is it a hip? Is it a hernia? Is it a bit of both? Do either keep him out to the point he's unreliable?»

Ultimately, none of this matters if it's being handled properly internally, but given the mixed messages, it isn't a good sign for a player that is actively being shopped, with some reporters even suggesting a buy-out isn't out of the question. Kane's deal with Edmonton runs for the next two-years, carrying a cap hit of $5.125 million annually over that time, and given the reported issues, he may just not be worth keeping on, and given the injury situation, this may all be coming to a head soon.
