Today Edmonton Oilers forward James Hamblin has made a touching decision to honor his mother by changing his number for the upcoming season.

James Hamblin was one of the best feel-good stories of the 2023-24 NHL season. He played 31 games for the Edmonton Oilers. James Hamblin took the internet by storm after he celebrated his first NHL goal with a tribute to his mother Gina Hamblin who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2017.

At the time that his mother passed away James Hamblin was in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers. Despite waiting several years for his NHL debut he always knew he would honor his mom when the moment came for him to score.

Now heading into what he hopes is his second NHL season with the Edmonton Oilers James Hamblin is making further changes to honor his mom this upcoming season.

James Hamblin changes his number to honor his mother's legacy

This afternoon reports are confirming that James Hamblin will be changing his number from 57 to 52. This change will represent Gina Hamblin's age when she passed away.

After splitting last season between the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL and the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL James Hamblin will be looking to make the Oilers full-time. He now will do so with the memory and in honor of his mother at all times.
