Two years after his last NHL game, former Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mikko Koskinen has officially retired to return to the player agent business in Finland. Though most NHLers love playing hockey and would play it forever, there is always going to come a point where this is no longer feasible. After all, even the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, knew his time was up in 1999, after he played his last game with the team veteran hockey stars go to to end their career: the New York Rangers. For my final game, I decided that since my dad drove me to the first game I ever went to, it would be great to drive my dad to my last game. The ride was good, but it was kind of awful in the same sense because he kept hitting my leg every three minutes and telling me that I could play one more year. I said, No, dad, I'm done.' Though no one will ever come close to the star power and impact Wayne Gretzky had on the game, another former Edmonton Oiler has officially retired from the sport, two years after his last NHL game. This is none other than former goaltender Mikko Koskinen, who at 36, will now re-enter the player agency business in his home country of Finland.

Mikko Koskinen started in the NHL with the New York Islanders, who drafted him 31st overall in the 2009 Entry Draft. He only played four games with the team a couple of years later, ultimately spending most of his time playing in North America under contract with their AHL affiliate the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. However, after several years in the KHL with Novosibirsk Sbir and St. Petersburg SKA, he returned to the NHL to play four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before splitting for Lugano in the Swiss League.

Though it is always a bummer when a hockey player realizes their time in the sport is over, having a new career not only to fall back on, but to look forward to, is something we can all be excited about. Hopefully, Mikko Koskinen finds the fulfillment and success we all now he is capable of as he continues along this new future.
