The Toronto Maple Leafs haven't closed the door on the idea of a Mitch Marner trade, and seeing this potential return may force them to make a blockbuster deal.

After months of speculation, we are no closer to a trade involving Mitch Marner, and with training camp just weeks away, the Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Brad Treliving have a huge decision to make. With his impending free agency in the summer of 2025, the team risk losing him for nothing if they don't move him, but with his no-trade clause, things get very interesting.

Now, the NHL Network has looked at a potential trade, with analyst Stu Grimson revealing the Maple Leafs biggest need, while suggesting that Toronto could fix that hole with a trade of Marner.

"This group needs a little more sandpaper, they need more grit where their top six is concerned. You look at that list of candidates in their top six. And I go back to the Florida series, the trouble that club had with Tkachuk and Bennett, both players who, you know, factor into the top six for the Florida Panthers. I know the Leafs covet that kind of gritty presence as part of your top six, who can also generate top-end offensive numbers.

This comes after watching the Florida Panthers, led by Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett up front win the Stanley Cup, and with the goal scoring ability and depth they already have, if they could find a player of this mold it could change their whole outlook. Beyond a gritty forward, Grimson revealed what a total package would look like in a Merner deal;

It'll be a haul. I got to believe there'll be a solid, established impact NHL player as part of the mix and perhaps a mix of picks and prospects... But it should be a rich return without question."

It's unclear at this point how aggressive the team will be in shopping him, but with a return like this a possibility, it would be a shock if they didn't at least try to move the veteran forward.
