The extent of Gary Bettman's power within the league is a subject of constant rumour. While some of his supporters are loyal to him, others think he only cares about himself. You might reconsider how much Bettman actually controls events after reading this story from John Scott.

John Scott, a former NHL player, made some intriguing remarks regarding his exchange with the Montreal Canadiens from the Arizona Coyotes. John Scott said that he knew Marc Bergevin, a former general manager of the Canadiens, from their time together in Chicago.

Once Bergevin acquired Scott he acknowledged to him that he needed to execute the transaction even though he had no interest in bringing Scott to Montreal. Scott made the implication that Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner, was involved in the decision.

Yeah, when I got to Montreal, I didn't even go to Montreal I went to St. John's. I talked to Bergy, Bergevin. I knew him from Chicago from when he was a scout. You know how they give jobs to ex players, here be a scout Bergy. I talked to him after the trade and he said "John I didn't even want yah. I just had to make this trade." And he didn't elaborate.

But there was Bettman's fingers all over that trade.

These are just speculations and opinions about Gary Bettman and the John Scott incident. It's important to remember that all events and decisions in sports organizations have multiple factors at play and it's difficult to attribute them to just one person. The events surrounding John Scott's trade and the All-Star game are still being discussed and debated by fans and the media, and the truth may never be fully known.
