Many CH fans are wondering what the trade deadline will look like for the Habs. With the injuries to two players that were expected to leave the organization in Joel Edmundson and Sean Monahan, it has put a damper on fans' expectations. However, a surprising piece of information was heard on BPM Sports today, as host Georges Laraque made a major statement. According to his information, the Canadiens' defenseman Michael Matheson would be of interest to several NHL teams right now. The former Habs player said that it is suspicious that Matheson is currently playing all over the place, on the power play and off the power play, and that he is playing more and more minutes. To that, I would say it's because he's the best defenseman on the team right now, but Laraque sees something suspicious in that. He adds this to explain why the Habs would trade number 8: In three years, when the Habs are going to be ready to win, with the surplus of defensemen that the Habs have and with the emergence of Kaiden Guhle, it's okay to let Matheson go right now. - Georges Laraque The former NHL enforcer also mentions the fact that since the club has no more ammunition to trade that could yield something big at the trade deadline with Edmundson and Monahan on the shelf, it would contribute to the desire to move the Quebecer. Laraque says Matheson would bring back at least a first round pick and he really believes it. Honestly, I doubt that Kent Hughes will agree to move his 28 year old veteran, especially since, as we can see in his last few games now that he is healthy, he is a great defensive anchor, as well as being a great mentor for the young backs in the organization. Also, the fact that he comes with a contract still valid for three more seasons at $4.875M, I think it would be hard to move him in the middle of the season. To a certain extent, I really wish Hughes could add a third first round pick for the upcoming draft, which is shaping up to be very talented, but I doubt that parting with Matheson is the right way to go. This will be something to follow in the next few days!
