The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers are both reportedly interested in bringing back former defenseman Tyson Barrie. Barrie, currently of the Nashville Predators, has played for both clubs in the past but now he is actively seeking a trade.
Leafs Express Interest In Predators Defenseman Barrie
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had the most banged up defense this season. John Klingberg is already out for the season and numerous other players have missed significant time. The team's defense was already thin coming into the season so it stands to reason that they would be interested in bringing Barrie back for the remainder of the year. Barrie spent the 2019-20 season with the Leafs in which he recorded 5 goals and 39 points in 70 games. Notably, the Leafs have already missed out on other options on defense such as Nikita Zadorov, who was traded to the Canucks, and Ethan Bear, who recently signed a two-year deal with the Washington Capitals. Apparently, their top trade targets may be to expensive so Barrie could be a decent backup plan.

Oilers Ready To Compete with Leafs In Bidding War For Barrie?
As mentioned earlier, the Edmonton Oilers are also reportedly interested in bring Barrie back into the fold. The Oilers have famously struggled defensively in recent years while they have primarily outscored their problems. Barrie fits that style of game perfectly as he has always been an offense first defenseman who cheats on defense at times.

The Oilers biggest problems have come in goal this season, but one way for the team to keep the puck out of their net is to make sure the other team simply does not have it. Barrie could help in that regard as he is best suited for when his team has the puck anyways. He is also an effective breakout player, creating rush chances and opportunities for his teammates to get the puck going in the right direction.

If the Oilers are simply looking to go all-in on a high-offense philosophy going into the playoffs, Barrie could be an ideal target, The forward core is already loaded with talent but their defense outside of Evan Bouchard has been a bit lacking in terms of point production. Whether or not this is the route the team will take remains to be seen.
