Last night the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche battled in Game 2 of their second round series. During the game Stars captain Jamie Benn laid a huge hit on Devon Toews that has caused controversy. The Dallas Stars are known for being one of the most physical teams remaining in the playoffs this year. Last night Jamie Benn showed exactly why when he ran over Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews behind the net. Jamie Benn delivers a big hit to Devon Toews. There was no penalty on the play.

Despite the clear head contact made by Jamie Benn on Devon Toews, it was determined that the hit was clean and no penalty was called on the play. After there was no penalty called fans were outraged by the call. Jamie Benn doing Jamie Benn things How isn't this a penalty??? #GoAvsGo

If Jamie Benn hit someone like this in the playoffs while wearing a #mnwild sweater, the NHL would have already held a public execution.

After the game, Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was asked about the hit. He seemed to disagree with the call on the ice but was careful with his words to not be fined by the NHL. Toews is fine. I don't know. It's a physical game. It's a physical player. I don't know. I don't know what to say. I mean does he catch a piece of his shoulder? Yeah I guess you could argue that. But the target is high and it's at his head and he makes contact with his head.

This quote by Jared Bednar seems to be the prevailing opinion by fans with stakes in the game as a fan of either team. While he technically does not hit Devon Toews in the head that was clearly his original target. While the NHL will likely never comment on the call it would be interesting to hear if the intention of a hit should be considered or only the outcome. That would make a major difference in how this play is called.
