The Canadiens are having a poor start to their season, and the Oilers know they too can do better. Now, an NHL insider has linked the two teams in a huge trade. Kent Hughes, the general manager of the Canadiens, may be looking to deal any of Joel Armia, Christian Dvorak, and David Savard, each of whom will be set to hit unrestricted free agency at season's end. Both Dvorak and Armia have huge question marks on their trade value, but for Savard, that number could be big. As a matter of fact, one well-respected insider has identified a great potential destination for the veteran defenceman.

David Pagnotta reports the Edmonton Oilers are in search of an experienced defenseman as they lack some depth in that position. Following their 2024 Stanley Cup Final appearance, the Oilers will try to once again make a deep run in the playoffs in 2025. «The Edmonton Oilers could be looking to add a player of David Savard's caliber.» - David Pagnotta

Adding a proven player such as Savard, a Stanley Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2021, could bolster that roster. Savard is in the final season of the four-year contract he signed with the Canadiens in the summer of 2021. With the March 7 trade deadline still three months away, Canadiens GM Kent Hughes will try to get a good return for Savard. Given how weak the trade market is this year, he might well succeed. With many of the top impending free agents on contending teams, the demand for players of Savard's ilk may be artificially inflated. The 34-year-old has five points in 20 games this season, along with a -4 rating and 16 penalty minutes. He's been great for the team, keeping some of the younger guys in check, such as Lane Hutson, but he'd be more valuable as an asset moving forward for a quality return rather than risking losing him to free agency for nothing next summer.
