Joe Pavelski is arguably the best player in San Jose Sharks franchise history, and in an interview, former GM Doug Wilson admits to a major mistake. The San Jose Sharks may be in a struggling period of their franchise history, but the past 20 years has seen plenty of success, most of which occurred under respected General Manager Doug Wilson. Wilson reigned over the Sharks from 2003 all the way until his retirement in 2022, and while he led the team to a Stanley Cup Finals, they were never able to take home sports most coveted trophy. Now, the 67-year old has taken a look back on his career, opening up on the biggest mistake he made during his time as General Manager of the Sharks; Sometimes, you can overanalyze things, Wilson said. But I, as a GM, with my love for Pavs and realizing how special he was, I look back, I probably should have dismissed historical analysis of contracts for players that age and said screw it. I was the GM. I take full responsibility, Wilson said. I wish I'd just said, you know what, he is that aberration? He proved that he is. Unsurprisingly, it was the free agency of Joe Pavelski that Wilson pointed too, as he let his captain walk to the Dallas Stars through fears of his career taking a nose dive and being on the hook for a huge contract. As we now know, he would go on to have immense success with the Stars before his 2024 retirement, with Wilson having nothing but great things to say about the superstar forward. Joe Pavelski is a player that we should be so proud of that we had the good fortune of getting him and having him as long as we did, Wilson said. Pav beat all the odds getting drafted in the seventh round and playing at the level he did until he was 40, Wilson said.

No matter what happened in free agency, Pavelski and Wilson are two key members of the successful period of the San Jose Sharks, and when it's all said and done, they'll always be beloved in San Jose.
