We saw a big surprise in the NHL forward market yesterday. The Pittsburgh Penguins put Finnish forward Kasperi Kapanen's name on the waivers, making him available for free to the other 31 teams in the league. After acquiring him in 2020 from the Toronto Maple Leafs, essentially for a first round pick, which became the 15th overall, an interesting prospect in Filip Hallander, as well as forward Evan Rodrigues, the organization is now looking to get rid of him quickly. At only 26 years old, this former first round pick in 2014 has some very interesting qualities to join a team lacking in offensive punch, such as the Habs. Given his $3.2M contract that is still valid for another season next year, we have reason to believe that he will make it to the Tricolore's lineup. Could Kent Hughes acquire him, when the team is short on players due to injuries? This is a plausible scenario. Let's recall the CH's lineup for the last game: RHP-Suzuki-Anderson Pitlick-Dvorak-Dadonov Hoffman-Drouin-Ylonen Pezzetta-Tierney-Belzile Kapanen is a winger, so there would certainly be a way to insert him into the lineup, possibly in place of Rem Pitlick, for example, and he could possibly make the cut with the CH. Plus, let's face it, Kapanen has a lot more potential than Chris Tierney, not to mention that his cousin, Oliver Kapanen, is a Montreal Canadiens prospect. This is a great opportunity for Kent Hughes to get his hands on a good player, with solid potential, and still relatively young. As the Habs' GM has said a few times, buy low sell high, and that is exactly what the Finn could become with the CH under Martin St-Louis. Here is his production in his last five seasons: - 20 points in 43 games this season - 32 points in 79 games in 2021-22 - 30 points in 40 games in 2020-21 - 36 points in 69 games in 2019-20 - 44 points in 78 games in 2018-19 If you were Kent Hughes, would you claim him? We'll have the answer at 2 p.m. More details to follow.
