The Maple Leafs now have a 4-4-1 record and are 14th out of 16 in the Eastern Conference. Prior to their 4-2 loss to the Kings yesterday, all three of the Leafs' losses came against clubs that did not make the playoffs last season. For a club that is in win now mode, the situation in Toronto is as fragile as a presto that is on the verge of exploding. Multiple unsuccessful playoff attempts in recent years are fueling the pressure on the team, and a bad start like this certainly doesn't help calm tempers. In addition, Toronto's stars are simply not playing up to expectations, especially on a team that must do everything in its power to win. The most recent Maurice Richard Trophy winner with 60 goals last season, Auston Matthews, has just two in nine games so far. To say his offensive contribution is below expectations would be an understatement. Despite the fact that it would still be surprising if the Leafs didn't make the playoffs, it seems pretty clear that Sheldon Keefe's job could be on the line, especially in such a crucial season for the group. Let's just say it's literally a boiling pot in Toronto, and the club must get back into the playoff picture comfortably over the next few games. Fans will be outraged if Keefe's team doesn't get out of their slump. They'll be looking to snap their three-game losing streak against Anaheim tonight.
